F1 >>> BUsinEss By Caroline reid Lewis Hamilton’s thrilling 2014 world championship victory didn’t just bring him sporting success. It accelerated him onto the rankings of the Top 20 richest people in Formula One at just 30 years old. The Mercedes star is the youngest person on the list and with a fortune of £170m he is closing the gap on rival champions Fernando Alonso (£255m) and Kimi Raikkonen (£200m). His salary this year will hit £23m and when his contract with Mercedes comes up for negotiation at the end of this season he is expected to re-sign for the highest salary in F1 history. Hamilton is still a long way off becoming the richest person in F1. Surprisingly that isn’t Bernie Ecclestone, but is his old friend, Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, whose massive £7.1bn energy drinks fortune gives him more than enough cash to fuel his two F1 teams, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. The growing value of the Red Bull brand means that Mateschitz has overtaken Ecclestone as the richest man in the sport, though with £6.2bn in the bank, the F1 boss is far from a pauper. The Top 5 is rounded out by three figures who are not so familiar in the paddock, but who all play an important role in the sport. Hair care billionaire John Paul DeJoria and car dealership tycoon Red McCombs are co-owners of Circuit of the Americas, while Subrata Roy, who is currently awaiting trial in India on fraud charges, is Vijay Mallya’s partner in Force India. Together the 20 figures who make up the Rich List are worth a combined total of £24.5bn. It isn’t a particularly diverse line- up: they are all men and three-quarters of them are over the age of 50. But they are proof that F1 still has what it takes to attract the world’s wealthiest people.
