Though he was slow he plodded along towards the back of the field seemingly without any major concern, reeling the laps off for another race finish. In the car though it was a different story, the 2009 world champion describing it as the most frightful experience of his career. "The first 30-odd laps were the scariest 30 laps of my life," he revealed after the race. "The rear just wasn't there. Any time I touched the throttle at any speed, the rear was gone. It just wasn't normal. "The rear felt like it wasn't connected to the front. It felt like every gust of wind had a massive snap. "It was pretty horrific for the first half of the race. Switch changes and new tyres at the end helped a bit." Until Spain Button had weathered the storm well, responding to the endless questions about their lack of performance with an unshakeable optimism that it would all come together. The car is good, we were told repeatedly, and in time everything would be sorted. McLaren would be much further up the field at the end of the season, we were assured. In Button's case, that optimism is waning. "I don't think I expect points at all this year," he confessed. "Hopefully today was an off-day. It didn't feel right." Button's dismal day capped off a tough weekend for McLaren, which had again flattered to deceive during practice. On the other side of the garage Fernando Alonso didn't even see the end of the race with 'brake problems' ruling him out. The Spaniard had coasted by the apex of turn one in what looked a particular amateur piece of driving, it was only when he crashed through the front jack when he came into the pits at the end of the lap that it became apparent that all was not what it seemed. So was the case for the official reason for his retirement, which claimed a visor tear-off got into a brake duct. So, definitely not a failing MGU-K or anything to do with the Honda engine, then.
