F1 >>> news F1 >>> news Officially, only Ferrari and Honda arrived in Canada with upgraded engines. so too did Mercedes, but it made its upgrades for 'reliability' purposes. Discontent among engine manufacturers at the end of last season saw the engine freeze thawed slightly, with teams afforded thirty tokens with which they could upgrade their engines. Each component of the engine was assessed and a token value applied with manufacturers able to spend their tokens improving their units. Thirty tokens gave manufacturers the freedom to upgrade about half their engine. All three existing manufacturers, Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault, used some of those tokens during the winter, leaving some left over to be used during the season. Honda, so as not to be left out courtesy of being a new manufacturer for this season, was given an average of what the other three had not used. The upgraded engines are available to all teams supplied by that manufacturer, though Sauber has admitted that it will most likely only use the updated engine at the Belgian Grand Prix. Similarly, the Mercedes factory team was the only one to use the upgraded power unit in Canada. Mercedes upgrades didn't use any tokens as they were made in the pursuit of reliability. Speculation suggested the Mercedes team had not been able to use the full power of the Mercedes engine in race trim and that the upgrade could see the silver arrows extend their advantage at the head of the field. Ferrari meanwhile is believed to have found in the region of 10bhp with its upgrade - that figure had been rumoured to be double that ahead of the weekend. Renault is the only manufacturer to have not upgraded its engine throughout the season. 14 GPWEEK.com // 14 GPWEEK.com // PARTNERS: F1 >>> news C M Y CM MY CY CMY K GP Week May FA Path HR.pdf 1 13/5/15 14:09 more prancing horses
