of pace for which he had no explanation. Teammate Daniil Kvyat was ninth but for a team which won the race twelve months ago it was a dismal result. The Renault donkey certainly didn't work to the teams advantage but Toro Rosso was again close on pace suggesting the problems are far more deeply seeded. Of concern for both teams is the fact Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a power circuit, as is the A1-Ring the circus hits next, which plays to Red Bull's weaknesses. It is currently fourth in the championship with Lotus beginning to make up ground. The Canadian Grand Prix and Red Bull's home event are races to be endured in the hope something better may come by the time the championship reaches Silverstone. It gives Lotus an open net. For the first time all season it managed to have both cars finish inside the points, though it was still a scrappy race for the Enstone team. Pastor Maldonado drove a clean race to score a solid haul of points but Romain Grosjean showed glimpses of why he was called a first lap nutcase. In recent seasons Grosjean has done much to rebuild his reputation but that didn't stop many fans pointing the finger at the Frenchman for the accident with Max Verstappen in Monaco. His clumsy collision with Will Stevens will only serve to reinforce that stigma and undo much of the hard work put in over the last few seasons. The contact was absolutely avoidable. There was no need for Grosjean to pull back onto the racing line and ser ved only to put his car at risk. And so it proved, the stewards doing the right thing by slapping him with a five second penalty. That Manor is plodding along quietly is exactly what the back of the grid needs to be doing. There were new stickers on the car in Canada which is positive and the host of new technical signings will only raise the enthusiasm within the team. Roberto Merhi's driveshaft failure was a disappointing way to end the race, but there are plenty of positives coming from the small English team. In a similar situation in many respects is Force India. It's been bumbling its way through the first half of the season with a comparative poor car, picking up points where it can before the introduction of the B-spec car at Silverstone. Nico Hulkenberg clung on to eighth place in Canada for more important championship points which sees it now tied with Sauber for sixth in the standings. It's not far from Lotus either, and with a stepped improvement forecast it could well move up the table in the backend of the championship. That's why it was important for both Lotus drivers to reach the finish and score good points. It's why Grosjean's faux pas should be viewed so harshly. Lotus is a far better car than the Force India, but so far Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez have proved themselves far superior drivers at maximising their opportunities. There are none more adept at that than Lewis Hamilton though. Given an opportunity the reigning world champion will seize the opportunity more often than not. He's not made a driving mistake that has cost him significantly and has won at the slowest possible speed. In recent races he's proved an sbility to not only drive a car quickly but manage it throughout the race.
