GP Week : Issue 225

Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit on the weekend, Montezemolo declared that he was unsure if he would have received the honour at all if not for Michael and the glory he brought Ferrari under his reign. "It is dedicated to him, because he is trying to win his toughest race," he told the Italian press. The German was injured in a skiing accident 18 months ago and despite the odd press release from his manager, there has been very little word on his condition. He was moved from hospital to a purpose built hospice at his Switzerland residence where he receives around the clock care from leading specialists in brain trauma. "He was not only someone I worked with, but above all a friend with whom I shared so much,” Montezemolo said of Schumacher. “To know that he now lies in bed for such a long time is very sad." Some reports indicate that he can blink and smile on the odd occasion and that he can sit in a wheelchair for periods of time, however, the seven times champion has yet to utter a word. The only official word in the past six months is that Michael is on the long road to recovery, but nobody is saying just what level of recovery is expected.
