GP Week : Issue 1
I HAVE been testing with the Force India F1 Team since the new regulations came into force and I have to say that the cars without traction control are pretty different to the ones we drove in 2007, and you have to get used to them. The car is now handling differently; it’s more aggressive to drive and under braking it’s much more unstable. It’s not so easy. Everything’s changed from last year. The cars that are not settled down properly will experience more problems and more issues than last year because Traction Control could hide a lot of problems with many cars – especially in the rain. It’s now quite different and mistakes are more easy to make, and that’s quite a big thing. I’ve had to change my driving style quite a bit. Now you cannot throw the car just as you want into the corners because the car has got no engine braking, and the power-to-weight ratio means you have to be much more delicate when you handle the throttle. You can see more of a difference between driving styles and driving performance now because the driver means more and the guys who can live on the edge have got a better chance to be fast. This is going to impact the racing quite a lot. What we’ve seen in testing, particularly on long runs, is a big difference in timings because the TONIO SAYS: I think the team is untouchable at the moment, especially Kimi. It seems as though he has got such a good pace when he is doing long stints, or in quali trim – and I don’t even think they’ve really been trying to go for quick times with low fuel. They seem to be really strong now and maybe to have gone back to the Schumacher era. where Ferrari did a great job in both the engine and chassis. They have really strong traction out of the corner and the way the throttle is applied is also very good. Everything is coming together.
