Testing sketchbook SUGGESTIONS that modern F1 cars are all 'alike' are countrered by Filisetti's image (right) which compares front wing package philosophies of McLaren's MP4-22 and BMW's F1 08. While many teams, such as Renault (below) have followed the 'bridge wing' idea originally pioneered by McLaren, BMW continues to follow its own path, albeit evolving a three-element front wing, with main attachment of the wing to the chassis via the central element – increasing the efficiency of the lower element. The BMW wing is more 'aggressive' in its central design – with the corresponding reduction in effect on its outer edges making it less susceptible to the movement of the front wheels. Renault's three-tier wing (left) works around a dramatically lowered nose cone (compared with the 07 car). The pillars connecting the nose to the main profile of the wing are dramatically inclined (almost horizontal) so as to reduce the obstacle and consequent drag generated by the standard vertical pillars. This increases the surface area of the main profile and improves air quality to the underside of the car. Renault's sidepods (below left) are much-modified, with the side winbglets no longer carrying the aero-negative rear-vision mirrors, and with much-revised, raised air flow into the pod to reduce air disturbance from the lower front suspension elements. Ferrari's rear engine cover is now "skin-tight" to maximise clean air flow to the rear wing – even more crucial now that electronic traction aids are gone.
