dropped out for the rest of Saturday. He returned on the Sunday under Super Rally rules to take one championship point for the Subaru team. This gave Hirvonen a chance to pull up to fourth, but the Finn then had a couple of punctures allowing Henning Solberg up one place. The Norwegian had two punctures of his own on the final day and the positions were reversed – but Henning had the very rare achievement of gaining manufacturer championship points for a second team in one year! Very fast in the opening stages, Gigi Galli went off the road and damaged his car’s roll cage which prevented him from continuing for safety reasons. Also out on the first day were the two Suzuki SX4s, both with engine-related problems. Loeb’s teammate Dani Sordo was a very early casualty, going off the road on the first stage but he returned in the unsuccessful hope of gaining a championship point for his team. A lonely sixth place went to Matthew Wilson, who was very badly delayed driving in the dust of Toni Gardemeister, who was struggling in his stricken Suzuki.
