n 54 year-old Austrian Herbert Breiteneder, who had twice been runner-up in the Division 2 (two wheel drive) European rallycross championship, died on April 5 when his ex-works SEAT Ibiza Kit Car went off the road on the Lico-Lavanttal Rally. n Richard Mason has scored his fifth successive championship victory in New Zealand, but his first after recently marrying his co-driver Sara! Reigning national champion Sam Murray, whose codriver was Andrew Roughead, a member of the British Rally Elite scheme, crashed twice on the first stage and abandoned the event. n This weekend's Rally 1000 Miglia is Round 2 of the FIA's European series and the first asphalt event in this year's calendar. Stages are run on mountain rounds around the lakes to the north-east of the event's spiritual home Brescia. Championship leader is Luca Rossetti (Peugeot Italia S2000) but last year's national champion and 2007 event winner Giandomenico Basso, the works Abarth driver, is seeded 1 n 176 entries have been received for this weekend's Lyon-Charbonnieres- Rhone rally, opening round for the French asphalt championship. SPECIAL StAGES DETAILS about Marcus Gronholm's future in motorsport are to be revealed at a press conference held by Ford in Stockholm on Wednesday (April 16). Expected to be present are twice WRC champion Gronholm, the company's rallycross driver- manager Andreas Eriksson and the latest version of the four-wheel drive turbocharged Division 2 Fiesta rallycross car. It is widely expected that Eriksson will contest the European and Swedish rallycross championships, while a second car will be shared by Gronholm and other drivers. Gronholm, who celebrated his 40th birthday in February and who retired from world championship rallying at the end of the 2007 season, has often stated he does not want another season-long commitment. “I do not work at weekends these days,” he has said to friends!
