GP Week : 29-Apr-2008
34 year-old Miguel Campos, the 2002 Portuguese Rally Champion, beat 47 other applicants to win the chance to contest the forthcoming Vodafone Rally of Portugal (May 9-10) at the wheel of a Peugeot 207 S2000 prepared by Kronos and sponsored by BF Goodrich. This was the first of six occasions when a local driver will be selected by local rally journalists for a free drive in an IRC round held in their country. Of a group of Portuguese motoring writers, eight voted for Campos, five for Rui Madeira and three for Machados Santos. Campos, who won the national rally title six years ago in a Peugeot 206 World Rally Car is now semi-retired from the sport, working in a family clothing company. He will have a familiarisation test with the car in the Algarve on May 5, a few days before the start of the Faro based event and will run as teammate to Peugeot Team Belux drivers Freddy Loix and Nicolas Vouilloz. The national Belgian federation has now opened the list of applicants for Belgian drivers wishing to be considered for a drive on the mid-summer Ypres Rally, run in the home country of the Kronos team. This IRC project is the initiative of BF Goodrich, which noted the Pirelli Star Driver project which is centred on the FIA’s regional championship series. The Rally of Portugal entry list shows 16 Super 2000 cars, nine in Peugeots and seven in Fiat Abarths, and a stronger Group N presence than in the opening IRC round in Turkey. Mitsubishi Group N cars are to be driven by Andreas Aigner, Juho Hanninen, Paolo Andreucci, Luca Betti, Bernardo Sousa, Araujo Armindo and Fernando Peres. The Rally of Portugal will be the second round of the 2008 IRC series. Campos Gets First BFG Vote WRC news >> 15
