SPECIAL EVENT >> ONE of the most evocative liveries in the long history of the race returns to Le Mans this year and there is a real chance that it could be seen in the winners’ circle. Aston Martin’s assault on the GT1 category will carry the blue and orange colours of Gulf Oil, famously seen on the factory Fords in the 1960s and Porsches in the 1970s. And the driving lineup in the British cars is as good as any team’s in the field, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Karl Wendlinger and Andrea Piccini joining Le Mans veteran, David Brabham. His co-driver Antonio Garcia was fastest on the test day, the Spaniard making the best of some rare, dry laps. The biggest challenger to the British cars appears to be Chevrolet Racing’s Corvettes, which filled the placings in the test. Jan Magnussen and Olivier Beretta lead the drivers, though the other American car that may challenge for class honours is the Saleen S7R of former winner Christophe Bouchut. In GT3, Porsche fans will need to be patient, if the test was any guide. Ferrari 430s numerically dominated, though Flying Lizard’s 997 GT3 RSR was second, suggesting that the Italians may not have things all their own way one the clock starts its second lap. Aston’s Gulf War Classic colours back at Le Mans, while Ferrari head GT3 23
