GP Week : Issue 15
GIOVANNI Bernacchini is co-driver for Gigi Galli, but he had a nasty shock during the Rally of Turkey. He found himself on the other side of the car, working the controls of the Ford Focus WRC. “It was Gigi’s fault, he was feeling so ill on the road section back to service that he told be to take over the driving,” he said. “I didn’t have a clue what to do. World Rally Cars aren’t like ordinary cars at all!” In the end Giovanni agreed to have a try and eventually, very slowly, he reached the service area in Kemer. “I knew that Gigi was still unwell, but I thought my problems were now over. Then a marshal stood at the end of the holding area, beckoning our car forward. I just didn’t dare to drive it again. The car could have suddenly lurched forward and killed him.” Co-drivers who drive? A curious question, so we checked out how the other Ford co- drivers lived up to their job description. Mikko Hirvonen’s co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen: “Yes, I once drove a World Rally Car for 50 metres in the service area in Greece, just to see if I was clever enough. I didn’t dare try again. Do you know how expensive Ford clutches are?” Jari-Matti Latvala’s co-driver Miikka Anttila: “Yes, many years ago. Janne Tuohino let me try out his Toyota Corolla World Rally Car. It was nothing like as sophisticated as the Ford, you know.” Giovanni wanted to know why co-drivers were powerless to do what drivers, and even team mechanics, seem to do without problem, and went off to take advice from Jari-Matti, pictured below. Just in case another marshall unwittingly chose to risk his life beckoning on their rally car … 1 Mikko Hirvonen Ford Jarmo Lehtinen 4:42:07.1 2 Jari-Matti Latvala Ford Miikka Anttila +7.9s 3 Sebastien Loeb Citroen Daniel Elena +25.7s 4 Dani Sordo Citroen Marc Marti +2:25.6s 5 Henning Solberg Ford Cato Menkerud +2:33.7s 6 Petter Solberg Subaru Phil Mills +2:48.2s 7 Matthew Wilson Ford Scott Martin +4:24.2 8 Conrad Rautenbach Citroen David Senior +7:46.7s RALLY TURKEY Points: Hirvonen 59, Loeb 56, Latvala 34, Atkinson 31, Sordo 30, Solberg 20.
