BERND Casier had the moment drivers dread on the fast straights and sharp bends at Ypres – a puncture they never knew about. Casier’s happening came at the pre- event Shakedown when he found his VW would not slow down, and his trajectory was blocked by farm buildings. “If I hit a building head-on, my engine would be smashed, so I spun the car,” he reported. He went sideways towards a gap narrower than the length of a Polo S2000. The car came to a halt with front and rear bodywork damaged, and the car completely jammed between two buildings. Team manager Jack de Keijzer said “extracting the car was a nightmare. It took ages before we could drag in back from between the buildings”. It took longer than it took to repair the car ready for the start the next day. He finished highest placed non-Peugeot driver on the rally. Caught between a house and, well, a house FOLLOWING another children’s car colouring competition (like they ran last year in Germany), the Kronos team turned up with Freddy Loix’s Peugeot 207 S2000 in a new colours scheme – with a difference. One side was painted by French speaking children, the other by Flemish children. But which was which? We asked Freddy, who did not know. “Ah, wait a second, I will tell you.” He checked both sides and confidently claimed “this side (the drivers’s side) has to be the Flemish side, so the other will be the French.” The Flemish side had cartoon characters, the French some flowing graceful colours, such are the nation’s cultural distinctions ... Multi-culturalism! NOT funny was the accident of Czech driver Jan Kopecky on Stage 6. He found a large section of concrete pylon lying on the road, right on the racing line. He could not avoid it, and his Peugeot 207 S2000 was thrown off the road and badly damaged. No other driver had seen the obstruction and there was general disbelief about the story, until he went to the press room and showed journalists the footage he had taken from his private inboard camera. “I had only made the tape to help me perfect my pacenotes for next time I entered the event ...” His proposed entry on the next IRC rally, Russia, in two week’s time is now threatened.
