GP Week : Issue 20
THE MotoGP circus’ star performers go on holiday in a state of some tension. The title battle has refocused on two riders, with Pedrosa’s costly German crash dropping him seriously out of touch. But the gap between Rossi and Stoner remains tantalisingly small – just 25 points. “Is a good advantage, but not amazing,” said Rossi, who has the added comfort of having broken Stoner’s run of three wins in a row. But one non-finish could put them equal again. And the pendulum has swung back and forth this year. Rossi too had a run of three wins earlier. Rossi has 212 points, Stoner 187. And it’s looking like a two-man fight from now on. Pedrosa on 171 is 41 adrift of Rossi. With seven races to go, that is a little too many for comfort. The battle to be fourth and best of the rest is hardly less tense, and led by the same pair of class rookies who were head to head for the past two years on 250s. Crash-prone Lorenzo still holds the edge in spite of a fourth no-score, with 114. But the consistent and ever-faster Dovizioso closed to within 11 points, narrowly overtaking Edwards in the process. Nor are Vermeulen or Hayden, on 89 and 84 respectively, completely out of touch. Title hangs in the balance Pos. Rider Nation Team Total time 1 V. ROSSI ITA Fiat Yamaha Team 44’04.311 2 C.
