Farewell tour gone wrong IT all ended in tears. Hopes that Luis Perez Companc would go home in glory after his final world championship rally entry never happened. He crashed with three stages to go and his co-driver finished the day in a helicopter on his way to hospital, happily with nothing worse than severe bruising. Team-mate Federico Villagra fared no better, crashing one stage earlier, rolling and catching fire, with more car damage but less injury: “The spectators were splendid. They gave me and my co-driver Jorge Companc nice cold beers, and they also put out the fire on the car!” Stage 3 hoodoo takes out Jar-Matti BIGGEST heartbreak of all afflicted Jari-Matti Latvala, heavily fancied for victory on his home event. He went off the road on stage 3. “I just could not accept the fact that it had happened once again.” Forget the fact that it took his car some 50 metres to come to rest after the steering broke at 170kph, it was the injustice of the situation: “This was my sixth ‘1000 Lakes’Rally and the third time I have crashed – on that stage...” 40
