> F1NEWS> Alonso questions Kimi’s fuel FERNANDO Alonso has led calls for an investigation into Ferrari’s pit-lane practices. The Spaniard’s call for an investigation comes after Kimi Raikkonen overtook him during his second stop at the Hungarian Grand Prix. “I don’t know how they did it,”he is quoted as saying by Spanish newspapers Diario AS and Marca. “We will carefully study the data and see if they have something that allows them to fill up faster.” The calls do not appear to simply be a case of sour grapes. Alonso had led Raikkonen for the duration of the Hungarian Grand Prix, and was overtaken by the Finn after the second round of pitstops. Given the timing and duration of Raikkonen’s first pit-stop in relation to that of Alonso, his second stop was considerably shorter than expected. He was able to emerge ahead of Alonso despite making a mistake on his in-lap, which cost him an estimated three to four seconds. How then was Raikkonen able to not only lose time to Alonso, pit and refuel to the finish, and yet still overtake the Spaniard, despite Alonso setting a blistering pace on both his in and out-laps? Alonso alludes to Ferrari having the potential of filling up their cars faster than their rivals, something which could conceivably be achieved by cooling the fuel before it is transferred to the car. This makes the fuel denser and therefore speeds up the refuelling process, while also providing a slight performance advantage for the first few laps back on track. BMW Sauber and Williams were both investigated for alleged fuel cooling at the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, although the stewards decided not to impose a penalty to either team. Article 6.5.5 of the Formula 1 technical regulations states that the fuel on board a car may not be more than 10 degrees centigrade below the ambient temperature. Further confusion over Raikkonen’s Hungarian Grand Prix pit-stops has been raised by the fact that the timing of his stops does not appear on the official results or on the official Formula 1 website.
