600 regs closer > Moto GPnews > TECHNICAL regulations for the production-based 600cc class, planned to replace the 250 class from 2011, came a step closer to finalisation at Motegi, with only detail changes proposed to the GP Commission by the manufacturers’ association, the MSMA. Agreement by the association was unanimous, and included a 16,000rpm rev limit and a 20,000-Euro claiming rule, whereby teams can buy any other team’s engine for that price. According to MSMA spokesman Takenao Tsubouchi, there was strong interest from all the Japanese manufacturers, though it was more at the prompting of distributors and dealers than from the engineering departments. Rumours that none were willing to supply were false, he said. One important principal agreed was that there should not be a single engine supplier, but open competition. As before, the rules specify a maximum of four cylinders, and repeat the aim of limiting costs and restricting possible modifications. According to FIM delegate to the GP Commission, Claude Danis, the important factor was that the decision had been unanimous. He expected it would be a street bike engine, with chassis regulations free. “But they will be prototypes,”he insisted. The proposed technical regulations will now be discussed by the commission, with a final decision expected at the next commission meeting early in December. One opponent remains KTM’s technical chief Harald Bartol, also a member of the MSMA, who said the rules look like a Communist charter: “From what I saw, they will be worse than a standard 600 engine. The street bike engines will have to be detuned. The next thing is that the 125s will be faster,” he said. He added that the expectation of reduced costs failed to take into account maintenance costs for a four-stroke racing engine. KTM, like fellow 250- class denizens Aprilia, have already committed to take part in World Superbikes, rather than join the replacement class. 15
