>>Moto GPnews First new tyre tests leave riders short of rubber ALREADY abbreviated, the two days of post-race testing at Valencia were cut short when half-and-half weather left riders sitting idle in the pits, with no suitable tyres available from the Bridgestone allocation. Monday had been dry, and all 18 riders had taken to the track, trying the prototype control tyres and, in several cases, their new bikes. But a damp track on Tuesday morning was too wet for slicks, but not wet enough for rain tyres. With no intermediates proposed in the new same-for- all allocation, fears of enforced down-time in the pits came prematurely true. “We didn’t turn a wheel,” said Rossi’s crew chief Jerry Burgess. Others with a greater need to test waited until 3pm, when the rain became heavier, and tested full wets. Early impressions of the new tyres sent mixed messages. According to Bridgestone’s Tyre Development Manager Tohru Ubukata, in order to secure better durability Bridgestone had “reduced the overall grip level of the tyres.” But according to those familiar with Bridgestones, little difference was felt between the tyres on test and those Images used in GPWEEK are shot by the photo-artists at Sutton Images. According to Burgess: “track conditions were a little better, and that contributed to the improvement. “For us, the tyres were basically exactly the same,” continued Burgess. “But everything is numbered differently, and they’re not telling us what the compound is. “We can basically tell by the performance what tyre it would be close to. Particularly when we’ve raced on Sunday and tested on Monday. “For us it was very close, and perhaps a little bit better, if anything. That was quite good, but without running 30 laps consecutively, you’re not going to really know,”he concluded. Capirossi’s Suzuki crew chief Stuart Shenton concurred. “They may be different for some Bridgestone people who were using different tyres, but for us more or less the same,” he said. Over at Kawasaki, however, they were in new territory, if only for them: “We’re now using the same front tyre that Casey and Valentino used all year,” said team chief Michel Bartholemy.
