>>F1brazil Home Pride “I AM so proud about that race I am so proud about the team. I am so proud about the people around who support me more than ever, more than 100 percent, much more than I expected. “That is really an emotional day for me. You always do everything perfect even with the temperature but we saw Lewis passing Glock again and that is really mixed a lot of emotions, but that is racing. “The race finishes at the chequered flag. We finished in front and we have to be very proud of that, we missed one point but that is racing. We need to be proud about our job, we need to be proud about our race and our championship. “I know how to win and I know how to lose. It is another day of my life. I will learn a lot from this day but I am very emotional.” So said Felipe Massa after what must have been the most rollercoaster couple of minutes of his young life. For 30 seconds he was the Formula 1 World Champion – 30 sweet-tasting seconds. His emotions in parc ferme as he rubbed his eyes must have been so conflicted that I’m amazed he even had the reserve of strength to get out of the car. He had given everything, done all that was asked of him, and delivered on an occasion which could, and possibly might have got to him a few seasons ago. But this isn’t the Felipe Massa of a few seasons ago. I, like many colleagues, was quick to pick up on the Brazilian’s foibles earlier this season. But in Brazil he showed just how WiLL bUxtOn GPWeek Editor much he has matured and just what a superb talent he is behind the wheel of a racing car. Lewis may have taken the title, but there were many in the media centre who believed Felipe to have been the moral victor on the day. At the end of a long and emotional season, Massa’s emotions on the podium had everyone choked. As he bit his lip and attempted to stem the flow of tears from cascading down his Pos # Driver 1 2 2 5 3 1 heartbroken face, you couldn’t help but not be moved. Felipe Massa has matured a hell of a lot in 12 months. He is Ferrari’s number one, and on the basis of this season he absolutely deserves that mantle. He spoke himself of the pride that he had in the team and all that they had achieved in 2008, but as he looks back on 2008 I hope that most of all he has pride in himself. For the way he has raced, the decisions he has taken, the manner in which he has held himself and the strength of character he has shown are the signs of a champion. Better luck next year Felipe. You’ve certainly got a new fan in me.
