GP Week : Issue 36
Top five WRC drivers of 2008 #1 – Sebastien Loeb – Citroen IT is a privilege to have the chance to see this rally master in action, speak to him and his co- driver, share a little of the world he lives in, and all the time wonder how one person can be so special. He is not just the best of today’s bunch; he has to be the best rally driver of all time. This year has been no different to what we have seen before. Pretty much everywhere you saw him he seemed to be doing something special; mastering a new challenge, climbing a peak that was even higher than before. This year there was one new factor that specially marked him out. He was the driver 62 who learned the quickest how to get the best out of the Pirelli control tyres, particularly the tyres for the asphalt rallies. Winning all four of the asphalt rounds was no coincidence. He was not perfect, for instance his accident and subsequent retirement in Sweden. He also had the element of luck working with him, such his victory in Finland. That was an event that by rights he should never have been allowed to start. Other drivers who committed the speeding offence in recce that he did were banned from the event … But, luck is part of the repertoire of the really great. It is getting the results that count.
