If he capitulates to FOTA’s requests he will lose any remaining authority that rests in his increasingly unstable position as FIA President. Furthermore, FOTA’s insistence on a reversal of the 2010 budget cap and technical allowances for new teams goes against Mosley’s strong desire to open up the sport to new blood. That said, FOTA has made public its desire for clarity in the system of governance in Formula 1, and the weakening of Mosley’s position should he accept their terms could be the first step in his deposition from the FIA Presidency. This remains unlikely however, as there is reason to believe that the FIA still holds all the cards due to the very strict manner in which the regulations have been written and in which applications for entry must be made. One line of thinking is that by entering their names for 2010 all FOTA teams will be a party to the new regulations as outlined at the time of their entry for next year, and that their conditions will simply be ignored. There is also a line Once were ... happier days. FOTA’s merry men just a few weeks back. First Ron (Dennis) quit, and then then things got more complicated ... of thinking that by adding conditions to their entry, FOTA’s application for 2010 is, in fact, illegal and will not be accepted. With no comment yet to come from the FIA or Max Mosley over FOTA’s demands, and an announcement due on the 2010 grid on June 12, one thing is clear: although the deadline for entries to next season’s championship has passed, the end of this saga is a long way out of sight.
