Technica The fast sweeps of Silverstone saw a number of developments in front wing aero, as GPWEEK Tech Editor PAOLO FILISETTI explains 1 Maldonado: We can beat Addax PASTOR Maldonado believes that he can take the GP2 Series title fight to the championship leading Addax drivers, following his second race win of 2009 at Silverstone. The Venezuelan now sits third in the championship, 14 points behind early title leader Romain Grosjean, but is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead of him and his ART Grand Prix team to launch a championship offensive. “The championship is great, and very close,”he told GPWeek. “I was very consistent this year in the races but not quite so consistent in qualifying. We have some problems with the car in qualifying and it’s not so quick in the beginning but we have very good pace in the races. It’s great but it’s not, you know? “But we’re working and pushing very hard to improve in qualifying and I think if we improve in qualifying to be in the top 12 five then we can win the first race and get some points in the second. Our race pace is very strong, we just need to push to be consistent in Race 1 and score as many points as we can.” Maldonado is the only GP2 driver to have scored points in every race so far this season, and confirmed that the importance of consistency in a championship as tight as GP2 was huge. “At the end of the championship it could be crucial,”he said. “Last year it was very close at the end of the championship and looking at this year it’s very close again. Addax are one step ahead of us at the moment but we’re working very hard, concentrating, and the objective is to catch them. “We’re not resting, we’re working and we know we need to improve to get more points than this weekend. We’re very consistent this year and that could be the difference at the end of the championship.” While most teams simply brought refinements of their aero packages to Silverstone, Red Bull rolled out its ‘B’- spec car for the home race, just a few kilometres from the factory. In most cases, the changes were primarily about front wing specification. 1 - RB5 nose development The most evident difference on the ‘B-spec’ Red Bull introduced at Silverstone is the much wider and flatter nose (red arrow). At its base, close to the tip of the nose, the TV cameras are integrated in a sort-of wing profile On the side of the nose there is also a small gurney tab, very similar to the one adopted on the Brawn BGP 001.
