But as if Alonso being Ferrari-bound wasn’t big enough by itself, all of a sudden Sebastian Vettel’s name is being touted as his team-mate. Is it a dream-team? Is it even in the pipeline? We know that half of it is most certainly is. But the other half … we’re not so sure. The rumour asks many questions. Would Ferrari go as far as to replace both drivers next season? And if it did, where would Kimi and Felipe end up? Who would go to Renault? And would Vettel really want to leave Red Bull? Could he? And if he did, does BMW maintain its rumoured hold over his future services? The one great thing about the rumour is that it’s got us all thinking about driver switches – who goes where and the ever-evolving insanity of silly season. A few weeks ago we rself! it is nice not to have to worry all the time about damaging the car. We were worried after recce that maybe the roads would become very rutted on the second pass, but actually there are only short sections which suffered”. The only really curious thing was the character of the roads on the Saturday morning. “When we were driving first car on the road on Saturday morning the surface was incredibly slippery. We soon realised that as first car on the road we were breaking up the surface allowing later cars to have more grip, and that these difficult conditions would not recur in the afternoon. “It had the same effect as the usual gravel road cleaning but for quite a different reason. We knew at lunchtime on Saturday that we would take back in the afternoon the time we had lost in the morning, and that is what we did. “It has turned out to be one of the best rallies in memory. I am very impressed how well the organisers did first time Some journos weren't fussed on Poland – but Hirvonen and Lehtinen loved it! here in Mikolajki in the championship. When they eventually get the service park sealed, everything will be fantastic. “It sounds a big effort to drive up from Warsaw but once you get here, the place is really nice. The World Championship has long since gone into Bulgaria denial: “It just won’t happen”, has been the pessimistic view from authoritative people in the sport. The beauty of rallying however is that the unexpected sometimes might just happen. And if we did, what that sport would look like? Who would be racing and where would those races take place? So whether the rumour is completely real or not – and we know that at least part of it is – it’s been a nice diversion. Until all the Nazi chat that erupted over the weekend, it’s been good to think about the sport again. To think about racing teams and racing drivers. Because that’s why we’re all here in the first place. Alonso and Vettel at a rejuvenated Ferrari, taking on the world? It may well be too good to be true.
