>>F1GERMANY Fuel issues cost Rosberg NICO Rosberg’s incredible drive from 15th on the grid to a fourth place finish, his highest of the 2009 season, was hampered by a fuel system problem, which potentially cost him the chance of a podium. Rosberg ended up carrying an extra 15 kilos of fuel in his Williams during the race, which accounts for a deficit in the region of half a second per lap. It’s a statistic that makes his rise to fourth all the more impressive. “It was a fantastic result for us today,” he said after the race. “As I started 15th, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much but I took a few chances on the opening lap and finished it in 9th place! Although I had more fuel than anyone else, I kept pushing hard and that, together with a little luck that Heikki Kovalanien had created a bit of traffic jam behind him, helped for sure. “I was also carrying a problem with the fuel system, so it was quite eventful and makes the race outcome even better. “We are continually progressing with our car, our development is looking good and because of this our pace is right up there. I am looking forward to Hungary now, because I think it will be another race where we can have a good result.” Alonso: Podiums are on FERNANDO Alonso believes his Renault team will be able to fight for the podium in 2009, after setting the fastest lap of the German Grand Prix en route to seventh place. The Spaniard, who experienced clutch issues in the race and spun on the formation lap, admits that improvements are still needed, but admitted the result had buoyed his confidence. “I think for us the race again was getting very difficult after Turn 1,”Alonso told the BBC. “We had a clutch problem in the formation lap and we lost five places at the start and then we were in traffic all through the race. “The last part of the race, that we were in free air, we were very, very quick and we set the fastest lap of the race. “That’s very positive and it is quite optimistic for the next coming races, but we need to improve Saturday, we need to improve the starts and when we put it all together, maybe we are a contender for the podium.” 29
