GP Week : Issue 80
Jerez, traditional opening round of the European season, has played a big part in the growth of MotoGP in the country. Now it is one of four rounds on Spanish soil, and reliably attracts among the biggest crowds of the year ... 122, 048 on Sunday. The fans could hardly have asked for a better day. Not just that the races were all good -- a feast of fierce fighting in Moto2, and a truly memorable MotoGP. Better still was that every race was won by a Spaniard. This is no coincidence. Hand in hand with the commercial development of GP racing, and helped by sponsors such as the now departed Telefónica MoviStar and Repsol, Spain has pursued a calculated programme of rider development, with one-make series, the Dorna Academy and the Red Bull Rookies Cup. There is also a deliberate attempt to include non- Spanish riders, but it is quite clearly the locals who benefit the most. Other nations can only look on in envy. When Spanish eyes are smiling Jorge Lorenzo didn't wait for his defeated rivals to tell him to "go and jump in the lake". He did it voluntarily, after taking MotoGP victory in the ride of his life. The Fiat Yamaha rider had to be helped to shore after his unconventional celebration, taking a flying leap into an artificial lake still wearing full leathers, gloves, boots and helmet. "I don't know why I am still alive," he said. He'd dreamed up the stunt the day before, but acknowledged it came uncomfortably close to going badly wrong. Weighed down by his riding equipment, "every time I tried to swim the water came up over my mouth," he said. "It was very hard. I thought I might die." He said there were other tracks with water nearby, but that "at Phillip Island the water is too cold, and there may be sharks." Go and jump in the lake Moto GP RACE >> 23
