Technical Update: Turkish GP The technical nature of the Istanbul circuit saw some significant new developments. GPWEEK Technical Editor Paulo Filisetti explains After Monaco, which is a very special track compared to the others in the calendar, Istanbul Park, is a very technical track, with a very demanding series of corners, that require the top efficiency from the cars. Here the development seen was vast in terms of new solution. The areas where the teams focused most of their efforts were the front wings and, for others, the F--duct. In particular this was the first time Red Bull, introduced this system. The team produced a very complex assembly compared to the others seen so far. The concept is very similar to those on the McLaren and Ferrari, with the air blowing on to the rear wing via two big pipes inside the engine cover. Like the first version of Ferrari's system, the driver uses his left hand to control the duct. The team tested it during Friday, but it was removed from both cars for qualifying and the race. The system will appear again in Montreal after adjusting it to make it consistent. Another team that brought an interesting development, as in Monaco, was Renault. Still focusing on the front wing, the team brought a completely different version of it, featuring a multiple series of vertical winglets and additional profiles that make the wing assembly more similar to the one adopted by Red Bull. The new wing in fact sports an interesting main profile featuring in its central section a deep horizontal slit, very similar to the McLaren one. The double flap too, is very similar to the McLaren, featuring a sinuous and slightly bent downwards shape. Furthermore the area of the endplates is now the most modified section of the wing -- it is now characterized by a multiple series of vertical elements, with a middle sinuous one, then a double squared additional upper profile, featuring wide vertical fences. This assembly proved being very efficient after being tested in practice, and then used on both cars for the race. F1 NEWS >> 12
