But these bikes, say Superbike chief Flammini, will contravene the agreement with the FIM that gives SBK sway over production-based motorcycles. Dorna's way will be to walk rough-shod over any SBK opposition, a tactic that was effective with Moto2. SBK has a different problem. The grid is 24-strong, comprised of seven different makes, including Aprilia and BMW. The series' weakness is its stature, and it is endemic. Like it or not, it's an upstart compared with the classic GP series, and with its firm production-bike basis it can never be anything but a junior cousin. It's natural that the two series should be at one another's throats, for each is run as an independent commercial enterprise. That the conflict tends to weaken each of them is just an unhappy by-product, not a reason for them to stop fighting. Meanwhile, evolution on the track has brought the bikes closer and closer to one another. It takes some knowledge to be able to distinguish a MotoGP bike from a Superbike, when you see one flash past, and that will be even more so with the new one-litre GP bikes. If there was any common sense involved, surely the two series should find a way to merge? Ah, I hear you cry. This is why we have a federation -- to play the common-sense card. But sadly the FIM has leased all its rights to these companies, and has little to do except perform ceremonies and count the cash coming in. That's how it stands now, anyway, and it's hard to see any big changes. So it will all carry on, with each series damaging the other, and neither gaining very much in the process. And no result in sight. That's why I'm looking forward to going racing again in a couple of weeks. At least you know who has won.
