GP Week : Issue 100

Ca t ch m e i fy o u can Nowweare... W hen GPWeeK launched at the start of the 2008 season, Formula One was still reeling from its spy scandal. The sport wasn’t in good shape, despite McLaren’s thrilling Alonso versus hamilton showdown and Kimi Raikkonen’s surprise stealing of the title. It was followed by Spankgate. Five issues into to its life, GPWEEK reported from Bahrain ‘Under Pressure: Mosley scandal overshadows Bahrain, PS Massa wins!’ There have been bouts of turbulence since, of course: The threat of a split series, Crashgate, the exit of Honda, Toyota and BMW, and most recently Ferrari’s controversy over team orders. But on the whole, the last 100 issues have been about racing. And though juicy goss and a dollop of controversy is what separates F1 from better behaved (read straight-forward, arguably boring) forms of motorsport, it’s true I think that since 2005 – when Schumi’s reign ended and we had a unpredictable racing again – F1 has just got better and better. 2008, 2009 and 2010 have proven to be among the most thrilling, unpredictable and unadulterated seasons in the history of the world championship. Hamilton’s last corner lunge to championship glory in ’08, Seb Vettel’s peerless first win at Monza for minnows Toro Rosso, Jenson’s appointment at the Jobcentre shortly followed by a world title, Schumacher’s return to racing after a three year Saga holiday; These are the moments that stick with me, entrenched by the fantastic photography that Sutton Images supplies for these pages. We’ve had some good yarns, and they were delivered to you, our readers, every Monday morning when the track had barely cooled. Each race GPWEEK is right there in the paddock at the heart of the action. Print media will never die. It has its place, certainly for monthlies. But for more frequent information- led publications, given the current climate and the extent of gratis content online, motorsport magazines like GPWEEK have to be free and, in order to increase circulation and decrease costs, digital. Slowly, advertisers are realizing the value in this. Chris Lambden and Keith Sutton identified this opportunity when they launched this e-zine, and since then – 100 issues ago – the circulation has risen rapidly to over 215,000 readers around the world. It’s a team effort. I’d like to thank Martin Holmes and Michael Scott for their expert WRC and MotoGP contributions, F1 guru Peter Windsor who has been a big hit with the readers this summer, and Naoise Holohan for staying put with me in the media centre while everyone else heads to the Amber Lounge. And last but not least special mention goes to my great mate (and GP roomie) Will Buxton, founding editor and helmsman for 72 of our 100 issues, and the chap who passed me the baton.
