Stoner was the first 800cc champion in 2007, when the smaller engines took over from the first-generation 990cc bikes, where Rossi was substantially the winningest rider. Since then, he has amassed three more wins than his Italian rival, even though Rossi has twice been champion in the class. All 24 of Stoner’s wins have been in the 800cc category, all but the latest on a Ducati. Now he is tipped to win several more times on the Honda. Rossi has the most premier-class wins in history at 79, but only 21 have been in the 800cc era. And his win rate is not expected to rise this year, as he gets used to the Ducati. Lorenzo is however in a position to make a late spurt, with all 15 of his wins coming with 800cc; Pedrosa has scored only 10 of his dozen wins on the smaller bikes. Stoner to dominate 800 era? 17
