The bike went down on its right side, explained his team chief Wilco Zeelenberg, and the clip-on dug into the gravel with the throttle stuck full open and the engine bouncing off the rev limiter. With fuel injection, the engine will continue to run even inverted. A timer is set to cut the engine after a few seconds. This gives a fallen rider the chance to pick the bike up and restart, and as long as the engine is idling there is only a small risk of damage, even if the oil pick-up does start sucking air. If the revs are up, however, this can destroy an engine in a couple of seconds ... as happened in Lorenzo’s case. He was running to the bike when he was hidden in a cloud of thick oil smoke, and then the bike caught fire. “ The engine is kaput,” confirmed Zeelenberg. THE return of a great old racing name is one step closer, with the English factory understood to be among 11 teams that have been invited to submit entries – and pay a substantial deposit – for the revised 1000cc MotogP class next year/ The teams represent 16 riders, most of whom are expected to take advantage of the new second-division Claiming Rule Team (CRT) class, allowed to use production- based engines, among other concessions including three extra engines and three extra litres of fuel. But Norton, as a factory, will not be allowed to run a CRT bikes. The only concession they will get is an allowance of nine rather than six engines. Others on the short list may intend to join the class as satellite teams, leasing factory bikes Candidates are mainly drawn from the Moto2 class, and interested teams include Interwetten, Blusens, Team Pons, Team Kiefer and Marc VdS. The last-named is already working with Suter Racing Technologies to develop a CRT prototype, powered by a BMW engine. Teams’ association IRTA general secretary Mike Trimby was unable to confirm or deny any of the names on the list, but explained the next stage. The 11 teams would now be invited to submit firm entries at the next race in three weeks, along with a deposit, amount yet to be confirmed. After that, the entries will have to be approved by the GP Commission, said Trimby. Existing MotoGP teams, such as LCR Honda, which might wish to move to the CRT class, are not included, since they already have contracts for entries for next year, he added. Team names are expected to be announced at the Catalunyan GP. Norton racing return a step closer 17
