Click HERE to go to 12 Technical Update: Spanish GP McLaren went to Barcelona with a pile of updates, but chose not to race some, as Technical Editor Paolo Filisetti explains Barcelona, is a very technical track where it is the common belief that a competitive car there is competitive everywhere. This due to the very long straight, plus fast corners, and a tricky twisty section, where balance and grip are paramount. For this reason, it was expected that the teams would bring many changes – and this was the case. In particular, Ferrari introduced a revised front wing, a new, then abandoned, clever rear wing, some changes to the brake ducts, and a revised floor. McLaren continued its development by introducing revised sidepods, used only on Friday than stripped off for qualifying and the race, and a new front wing. Red Bull, on the other hand, mainly focused their efforts on further developing the exhaust area to maximize the positive effect of their blown diffuser The most interesting change brought here by Ferrari was the rear wing, that sported big additional Gurney flaps, directly connected to the centrally V shaped flap separator. This was a clever idea, correct by the letter of the rule related to the rear wing dimensions, that exclude the wing separators from the maximum height limit of 95 cm. The rear wing, fitted in such way, exceeded that limit by 30 mm. However, the FIA deemed this solution illegal, disagreeing on the Ferrari interpretation and decided that the configuration breached article 3.10.3 of the technical regulations. Ferrari apart, McLaren was very active in their car development. In particular at the front introducing a deeply revised wing. This featured a narrower flap in terms of overall width, being more separated from the outermost end-plate portion. Furthermore the outermost additional winglet was shaped, featuring a slight sinuous profile coupled with a smaller and more curved central additional winglet. This configuration was particularly efficient in terms of providing a stable and increased downforce load , capable of making the harder tyres work properly, especially when compared with the Ferraris.
