Click HERE to go to Technical Update: Monaco GP Monaco equals downforce at almost any cost plus cooling necessity, as GPWEEK Technical Editor Paolo Filisetti explains With just one week between the Barcelona and Monaco race, it was pretty obvious that there would not be too many radical developments on the cars. Of course we are talking about major developments, not taking into account, the inevitable ones related to the particular nature of the Monegasque track. This in fact is a circuit where downforce plays a paramount role even if it goes at detriment to the overall efficiency of the cars. So high downforce configurations were pretty common throughout the field, with some solutions already seen in Barcelona when, on Friday, many teams tested them in light of this forthcoming principality race. Apart from that, it was interesting to note that Ferrari brought a revised front wing , featuring just one single flap instead of the usual double one, as already tested in Spain last week. An interesting development was a new engine cover. In reality this was not totally new – in fact it is a refinement of a solution that was due to be adopted in Malaysia, but due to the cold weather conditions of this year’s race weekend, was not used there. The new bodywork, in fact sports an huge cooling vent at the rear, very similar to the Red Bull model. This was pretty useful in Monaco due to the slow average speed that puts pressure on the engine cooling on this track. Another interesting feature, seen here, still related to cooling improvement, was the one adopted by Mercedes. It featured a sort of additional snorkel, very similar to the first version adopted by McLaren at the launch, featuring two ears, so as to channel fresh air to the oil radiator and KERS.
