Massa crash is first Monaco retirement since 2002 Felipe Massa failed to finish the Monaco Grand Prix for only the second time in his nine-year Formula One career on Sunday, after crashing into the armco barriers in the notorious Monte Carlo tunnel after 32 laps. Massa’s crash brought out the first safety car period of the season as marshals looked to recover his stricken Ferrari from the centre of the road at the Nouvelle Chicane, having been running in ninth place at the time. The crash sequence began when Hamilton attempted to overtake him at the hairpin, with the ill-judged move resulting in the pair making contact. Hamilton subsequently dropped behind but got a better drive off Portier and was side-by-side with the Brazilian in the tunnel. With Massa on the wider line, he edged out onto the marbles and with no grip he slid straight into the barriers. Massa said that the damage he incurred while being hit by Hamilton led to him crashing into the barriers. “I am very disappointed with the way my race ended,” he said after retiring. “After Hamilton had tried to pass me at Loews [hairpin], which is an impossible place to do it, hitting me and pushing me into Webber, the car was no longer right and I could not drive it properly, which is why he got on the inside of me inside the tunnel. That put me on the dirt and then I ended up in the barrier.” Massa had suffered earlier in the race by being stuck behind Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes, losing two to three second a lap on the leading quartet. “At the start, I got away well, but at the first corner I found Webber and Fernando in front of me: I was on the outside and Rosberg managed to get inside me,” he continued. “ That meant I missed out on the train that would have kept me up with the leaders, as I spent too much time behind the German’s Mercedes. “ Today, we were competitive and, given how things went, I could have finished fourth.” 30
