GP Week : Issue 122
One of few racing incidents of note at the european Grand Prix in Valencia was a brief moment of contact between Michael Schumacher and Vitaly Petrov on lap 15 of the race. Schumacher lost his front wing endplate as a result of the contact, and had to pit from ninth place. When he returned to the track, it was in P19, and the German driver was unable to recover. He eventually crossed the line in P17, one lap down on the leaders. Petrov finished in P15. Speaking after the race, Schumacher took full blame for the incident, which cost him a points-scoring finish on Sunday afternoon. “I saw Petrov quite late, even though I was aware that he was coming, and tried to brake as late as possible and go round the corner with him,” the Mercedes driver said. “But when I wanted to draw back, I locked the front wheel and slipped into him, which was clearly my mistake. From then onwards, the race was done and I just had to drive the car over the finish line.” Schumacher/Petrov contact provides minor excitement! 26
