GP Week : Issue 125
F1 NEWS >> THE FIA has made a tweak to the Formula One rules to encourage teams to run in wet-weather Friday practice sessions with a new clause that allows them to receive extra tyres in such circumstances. The tweak was made alongside other minor revisions a fortnight ago, coming into effect at last weekend’s British Grand Prix. Prior to Silverstone, teams were limited to four sets of intermediate tyres and three sets of extreme wets for the entire dura- tion of the weekend, but now drivers are to be given an extra set of intermediates if either first or second practice on Friday is declared wet. This particular set of inter- mediates will only be allowed for use on Friday however to encourage running in practice. Article 25.2 e) of the Sporting Regulations reads: “If either practice 1 or practice 2 are declared wet one addi- tional set of intermediate tyres will be made available to all drivers. This set of tyres must be returned to the tyre supplier before the start of practice 3 [on Saturday morning].” Along with the tidying up and rephrasing of some other regulations, the new rules includes a three-strikes rule for drivers. On receiving a third repri- mand within the same season a driver will be handed an automatic ten-place grid penalty for the next race, although at least two of the reprimands must be for driving misdemeanours, as opposed to procedural offences such as arriving late for a press conference. Article 18.2 of the Sporting Regulations reads: “Any driver who receives three repri- mands in the same Championship season will, upon the imposition of the third, be given a ten grid place penalty at that Event. If the third reprimand is imposed following an Incident during a race the ten grid place penalty will be applied at the driver’s next Event. “ The 10 grid place penalty will only be imposed if at least two of the reprimands were imposed for a driving infringement.” F1 NEWS >> For your daily dose of Formula 1 news ...
