Click HERE to go to A new track is unknown territory as the teams try to discover during the race weekend, whether their data simulations have been accurate in terms of base set-up. In these conditions, no-one usually tries to introduce new solutions, as the result would not be totally clear, as the variables involved are too many, to have a clear picture of how a certain solution is good or otherwise. Anyway, with just three races left, as we have discussed previously, new parts are aimed primarily at early testing for 2012 cars. In Korea, Ferrari brought just one new front wing that was used only by Fernando Alonso. Here there were three new wings available for the weekend. It was possible to see a back-to-back comparison between the wing used by Massa and the one used by Alonso, that in theory were completely identical. In reality on FP1 it was clear that (what was not visible from outside) there was a big difference inherent to their respective construction. In fact what was visible from the TV footage was the wing extremities flexing repeatedly at the end of the long straight, with sparks emanating from under-wing endplate skid-blocks while touching the tarmac. This led to much speculation regarding the flexibility rate allowed by the rules, but as we see it, the wing complies with the stringent rules enforced by the FIA. The new wing in detail, features a different layout of the additional upper flaps, now slightly curved upwards, in their section closest to the single endplates. Beside that the flat main profile of the wing is a bridge section close to the endplates. The flatness of the main profile may be considered a common point with the new wing introduced by McLaren. In fact now the main profile is almost completely flat featuring just an inclined plane towards the endplates, compared to the double sinuosity, with sharp edges, of the previous version used so far. Both the McLaren and Ferrari wings, may be considered as interpretations of the Red Bull front wing, particularly efficient since its first version adopted at the start of the season. These new solutions won’t be retained completely as they are now on next year’s car, as the rules regarding front wings are changing, to prevent such kind of construction. However, part of the concept will provide the baseline for the new front wings of the relevant cars, and data collected so far will be very useful.
