GP Week : Issue 143
41 WRC FEATURE >> My next rally will be Monza in a DS3. I am not going this year to Var which is the same time, so I can let Latvala win in Var. Then we will be doing some development testing next week already, especially on gravel. I am not expecting massive changes in our 2012 cars, just adjustments. The car is already at the highest level of development so I think now it is difficult to make big differences. What do you think about the coming other drivers or young drivers, like Dani Sordo who plays a team leader role in Mini, or Tanak? We have known drivers like Ostberg and Sordo for quite a long time now. Tanak was quite a good surprise in Britain. He had the different tyres but we don’t know they are better or worse. I do not know how important it was for him to be running on DMack instead of Michelin tyres. It is completely uncertain. It is complicated to know exactly how good he is. But anyway he has done a good rally. You said some very nice things during Wales Rally GB about Latvala. You must have really been impressed by him? He was really fast, not only here in Wales but on tarmac also. I couldn’t check it for myself but I could see he was going very well in France, and in Spain on the tarmac he was incredibly fast, so now nearly on every rally he is fighting in front. So he is really a big driver for next year. How strong is your passion still for this sport? For sure I started rallying for passion and quite quickly I was able to drive for a manufacturer. And today I still feel the same sensation when I drive the car. I would say I really like driving on rallies. That’s my main motivation. It will not change my life if I have seven titles, eight or nine. It’s just because I enjoy the moment and I like what I do. My contract with Citroen is for another two years with the option to stop after next year. And your plans for your Porsche team? At the start of the season I was trying to get some contacts for racing, maybe next year, I just wanted to have the door open in case I stop rallying. In the future I think the day I retire from rallying it will be difficult to stop competing completely. I would like to continue to drive a bit in races. I have some experience in racing and for sure I would like to drive something just for fun. It would be nice to live off my fortune, manage my own team and to continue to be in motorsport. Will you hesitate again about your future in the middle of next season? In the middle of every season I am sure I will say “next year I stop” but then maybe I’ll decide to continue! That is me!
