Montreal is another special track on the F1 calendar, close to down-town Montreal, on an island in the middle of the Saint Lorenzo River. This track features a very twisty section with many rapid direction changes, and a very fast section featuring one of the longest straight in the calendar. It is a track where brakes are put under extreme pressure – their top temperature and wear are the highest in the season. It is hence very tricky to find a correct balance for the cars, between the twisty section and the fast one. Usually it is the latter which takes priority, so the teams try to maximize their top speed performance. Here usually new aero packages are introduced, and this time the tradition was kept alive. Ferrari adopted for the first time their latest evolution of its exhaustsystem. This layout was briefly seen in Barcelona, while in Monaco it was introduced as a different layout that can be considered a preview of the current one, clearly McLaren inspired. The new exhaust now blows in a sort of half pipe towards the outermost rear section of the sidepods. The channel makes the gases increase the speed of the airflow passing over the horizontal section of the floor and then channeled through the central section of the diffuser (see blue arrows). This new layout provides an increased amount of downforce to the rear end of the car, improving both rear ends stability and reducing tyre wear caused by excessive sliding. Another team that brought an interesting evolution to their aero package was Wiliams. The Grove based team adopted a completely new and radical layout of rear wing. This one features the trailing profile shaped as a V profile upside down. This feature helps in terms of reducing the drag on the long straight, but at the same time provides an adequate downforce level for the twisty section of the track. This solution was adopted on both cars – and could be useful in Valencia where the track has similar features to this one.
