35 GPWEEK.com // PARTNERS: Sauber may not have had much luck in the final classification but they were exceptionally fortunate that their mechanics escaped major injury following Kamui Kobayashi’s mis-judged second pitstop. The Japanese ploughed into his pit crew as he pushed for his fifth points finish of the year, but only minor cuts and bruises were reported despite the heavy impact. Kobayashi went on to finish 11th after losing 15 seconds, without which he would likely have challenged Schumacher for seventh. Perez was also heading for points, but had to retire after being sent spinning by Maldonado on lap 12. The high-speed layout of the Silverstone circuit showed just how much progress remains to be made at Caterham to consistently challenge the midfield, with lead driver Kovalainen taking the chequered flag almost 90 seconds adrift of his nearest representative rival. He dropped to 21st at the start but once he had repassed the HRTs and Marussia he was on his own until the finish. Team-mate Petrov didn’t even make the start after suffering an engine failure on his first reconnaissance lap. Renault is still investigating the cause. Toro Rosso have now gone seven consecutive Grands Prix without a points finish after yet another lacklustre weekend. After qualifying an admirable 14th and 16th in Saturday’s torrential rain, Ricciardo and Vergne spent the race at the back of the midfield pack. The youngsters had a ding-dong battle between themselves, with Vergne leading at the start. They then swapped places three times, with Ricciardo ultimately coming out on top after overtaking the Frenchman with three laps to go. They both finished ahead of Rosberg after a slow final pitstop for the Mercedes driver. Pedro de la Rosa won the award for the most adventurous strategy after pitting only once during the grand prix. He completed a mammoth 27 laps on the hard tyre before his pitstop, and stayed within ten seconds of Pic until his tyres started to go off. He then dropped to over 20 seconds behind, but still finished ahead of team-mate Karthikeyan who opted for a conventional two-stop strategy. The Indian kept Pic behind under intense pressure during his first stint but quickly lost ground and finished 35 seconds behind the Frenchman. Bruno Senna recorded his third points finish in four races in what was his first ever British Grand Prix after coming home in ninth place at the wheel of the FW34. A blistering start by the Brazilian catapulted him from 13th to ninth, from where a conventional two-stop strategy placed him tenth with 15 laps to go. He then overtook Hulkenberg thanks to DRS with two laps to go to secure an extra point. Maldonado was on for an even better result in the sister car but was pulled from contention after colliding with Perez after his first pitstop. He finished in 16th. Marussia had the tough job of focusing on a race weekend in the wake of test driver Maria de Villota’s accident earlier in the week, but they did so admirably with Timo Glock taking the chequered flag just 25 seconds behind Kovalainen. He was compromised by a wet weather set-up on his car, but was still happy to take the flag in 18th. Pic was allowed to start despite failing to make 107% during Q1, and easily beat both HRTs once he got the jump on them during the first round of stops. He finished 20 seconds behind Glock.
