Hungary as usual represents the last event of the first leg of the Championship, before a well-deserved by all the F1 fraternity summer break. It is also the second of back-to-back races, coming just one week after Germany. Usually,due to this fact, only adjustements to the aero set up of the cars are expected, in a similar fashion to what happens to Monaco, due to the high downforce demands of this track. However, in the last few years Hungary often sports interesting changes on the cars, that are carried on towards the end of the championship. This is because it is the very last test bench before the summer break, now that in season testing are forbidden. This time there was a continuity seen in the development first seen in Germany and now here. In particular it was interesting to see how Lotus is improving their cars with a strong development rate, that at Hockenheim sported a sort of double DRS system, even though in its provisional version. Germany in fact was the first outing for this device which was brought to Hungary and solidly tested on Friday by Raikkonen. In detail this system features a large duct exiting the engine cover and blowing he air channeled via two ‘ear’ inlets placed on each side of the engine air intake. The duct passes over the rear beam wing. It is understood that at certain pressures the airflow is diverted through a smaller and thin duct curved upwards connected to the rear wing main profile. In this way it would create a magnified effect for the DRS, reducing the drag even more by stalling the main wing profile. Another interesting technical change was also related to Lotus. The team brought a deeply revised nose featuring a ‘pelican beak’ profile. The nose features larger than standard pillars (see orange dotted line), and a big bulge underneath. These two combined elements increase the downforce and improve the stability of the front end of the car, especially in mid-speed section of this track.
