TEXAS GRAND PRIX: LEGAL BATTLE HOTS UP NO LOITERING RULE TO BE ENFORCED A continuing flurry of claims and counterclaims concerning promotion contracts for next year’s GP at the Circuit of the Americas at Austin, Texas, has muddied the waters for the inaugural race, provisionally scheduled as the second round next year on April 14. As reported last week, putative promoter Kevin Schwantz is suing the circuit because his company, 3four Texas, has been cut out of the loop, after he believed he had a contract for the event. In the wake of his suit, Dorna issued a statement last week, saying that Schwantz’s company had been contracted as promoter in February 2011, when “Dorna understood that 3four Texas had an agreement with COTA to run the event” . But the company had failed to furnish Dorna with required evidence of an agreement with COTA in June 2012. “Dorna had no alternative than to terminate the contract,” the statement read. A new contract had been made with COTA. On Friday Schwantz responded, saying: “COTA’s claim is false;” citing a press release the circuit had issued in 2011, which had named his company as party to the MotoGP contract.” The race, which follows this year’s inaugural F1 event at the track in November, will be a third round in the USA, with both Laguna Seca and Indianapolis contracted for next year. MOTOGP >>> NEWS Race management has acted to stop the dangerous practice of riders lapping slowly in practice and qualifying, waiting for a fast man to pick up a tow and riders briefed that they face sanction if they are judged to have done that. It is particularly prevalent in the smaller classes but not unknown in MotoGP, and has caused angry outbursts in the past from Casey Stoner, among others. Stoner has singled out Hector Barbera as a particular offender; while Rossi’s leg-breaking crash at Mugello in 2010 was triggered when he slowed down to avoid being followed, causing his tyres to lose temperature. Moto2 and Moto3 qualifying sessions often see groups of up to ten riders cruising round nose to tail, waiting for a fast man to come along. The danger is obvious, with big speed differentials on the straights, and elsewhere. Race Director Mike Webb confirmed that riders had been briefed before the Misano race that the practice must stop. As well as visual evidence and that from closed-circuit TV, lap times will be analysed. Any rider doing a lap slower than a certain level, other than an in- or out-lap, will be investigated, and faces a sanction at the discretion of race management.
