After the ultra-fast track of Monza, Singapore represents the other side of the medal as a track. It is in fact completely different, without a very long straight, featuring an huge array of 90 degree corners, that impose huge braking on the cars, and even worse, not enough time to cool the brakes between one corner and the next one. Many teams brought updated aero packages for this high-downforce track. Red Bull debuted a completely new rear wing, with simplified endplates, featuring a reduced number of vertical fins in their bottom end. Ferrari brought a complete package, featuring a new front wing and a deeply revised rear wing. In reality not all the changes brought here by the Italian team were successful, in terms of delivering the performance shown in simulation and wind tunnel tests. In fact, only the front wing was successfully adopted throughout the weekend, while, the rear wing was discarded by both drivers after testing it on Friday, reverting to a previous version. The front wing was a mix between the latest version seen at Monza, in terms of wing profiles and adjusting device. Added was a new upper profile featuring two small flaps with the outermost having an upper edge rounded downwards close to the endplates. This kind of solution proved very efficient in adding downforce without being too disruptive in terms of drag. The new rear wing instead was not so efficient as hoped, especially in terms of improving its integration with the rear diffuser. The increased number of vertical fins (8) didn’t prove to increase the extraction of the air at low speed and with higher ride heights as needed here, and as it was supposed to happen based on the wind tunnel data. I guess we could say that half of the package of changes was enough for Ferrari to keep the other competitors at distance. In this way, championship-wise, the result of this race for Ferrari may be considered as a success, but at Maranello they know very well that wins are still paramount for Alonso to be certain of clinching the title.
