Byrne defied the pain of an injured shoulder to thrust himself into title contention with a superb BSB victory at the ASSEN TT Circuit last weekend. “MOTOGP BIKES ARE THE OPPOSITE OF SUPERBIKES” Top Superbike rider Jonathan Rea completed his short and hectic stint as a substitute MotoGP rider at the Aragon GP with a strong ride to seventh, showing steady improvement on Casey Stoner’s Repsol Honda ... and gave an interesting assessment on the difference between the two types of racing bike. Stoner is expected back for the next race at Motegi, so Rea’s tenure is over. At first he had found the biggest adjustment was, as usual, to much stiffer chassis, more exacting and grippier Bridgestone tyres and the different and more powerful carbon brakes. After two races, however, having closed the gap to the leader from 43 to 32 seconds, with more to come with more experience, he was able to give an explanation of a greater and more subtle difference ... the electronics. Because of the technical differences and the extra power, “you use the electronics in the opposite way,” he said, after explaining he’d spent most of the race exhausting all the options on the electronics, “playing with traction control setting and engine mapping. I got to the point where I was just confused. “In Superbikes I adjust the traction control during the race to give the electronics more control ... to save the tyre when it has started sliding. “Here it works the opposite way. You need to reduce the traction control to let the tyre spin. Other wise the electronics slow the engine too much. “At about half distance the rear was spinning a lot, so I put more traction control on, and I went no faster. It was hard to get my head around it. “In Superbike, the feeling with the electronics is that the rider can make a lot of difference. Here electronics play a huge part, but with such a strong engine you need electronics to be able to finish the race. If I got another chance to ride the bike, I would spend a lot of time on worn tyres to learn more,” he said. “In MotoGP the electronic possibilities are endless – but because of all the wet sessions at Misano and here I had to learn about it during the race.” MOTOGP >>> NEWS Jonathan Rea 13 GPWEEK.com // PARTNERS:
