F1 >>> NEWS With the publication this week of the 2013 Sporting Regulations one very important question about the source of future funding for the FIA has been answered at last. As was rumoured, teams will be paying a sliding scale of entry fees based on their performance in the previous year’s championship. “The winner of the 2012 World Championship for Constructors will be required to pay a basic fee of US$500,000 plus US$6,000 for each point gained in the 2012 [season],” the 2013 regulations state. “Every other competitor will be required to pay a basic fee of US$500,000 plus US$5,000 for each point.” While certain sections of the F1 news media have taken a tabloid approach to the story, screaming about a ten-fold increase in fees in an era of austerity, the simple fact is that the revised fee structure will actually see the bulk of teams paying a not dissimilar amount to compete as they do at present. In addition to their entry fees, teams have to pay a number of additional costs not seen by the public, from hospitality suite rental to weather data and more besides. The revised fee structure will see a number of these additional costs rolled into the single payment, simplifying costs for all and sundry while giving the FIA much-needed additional operating capital. Speaking to the Financial Times earlier this year, FIA president Jean Todt explained the existing payment structure and his proposal for change in greater detail. “At the moment the way things are split is that the teams are paying one entry and then we charge them a service which is retail which is a different service which is supplied to them and those services are recharged to them,” Todt said. “So, it’s not we just murder everybody. The biggest, with more income, will have to pay more. The smallest, with less income, will be able to pay less. “The figure that I have been reading and all that are not accurate figures and the intention, rather than having now the entry fee which is €330, something like that, plus the repartition of the cost, which are the result of the ser vices which are supplied, which is about €400 per team, so €350 plus €400, that makes about €750, all that will be included on the item entry fee.” Asked for his opinion on the new entry fees during the Friday press conference in Abu Dhabi, Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn took a mature and pragmatic view on the revised regulations. “We would be delighted to pay it because we would be scoring a lot of points,” Brawn said. “In fact, if you’re a mid-range team, and considering the fact that all the extra facilities that we pay for separately at the moment are rolled into that entrance fee, I think for a lot of teams it’s going to be very similar [in terms of overall cost]. It’s going to make more substantial difference for those teams who finish in the top three or four of the championship.
