GP Week : Issue 184
Giedo van der Garde: Caterham An excellent start saw van der Garde jump the Sauber of Esteban Gutierrez and teammate Charles Pic before dropping back to last place after the first stops. It didn’t get much better for the Dutchman as he made contact with Mark Webber while being lapped by the Australian. The incident resulted in a drive-through penalty for van der Garde. Unbelievably, he made the same mistake again while being lapped by the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg – although Hulkenberg had moved across the Caterham driver’s line in the braking zone. Nevertheless, stewards gave van der Garde a five-place penalty for the British Grand Prix for impeding Hulkenberg, stating that the Sauber “had to use DRS and full KERS in order to overtake a lapped car.” Nico Hulkenberg: Sauber A terrible start from Hulkenberg saw him out-brake himself at the chicane at the end of Lap 1. The German racer managed to claw himself back up to 11th place, his original starting position, a few laps later, but Hulkenberg eventually fell back to 15th behind the Williams of Valtteri Bottas. A frustrated late race move while lapping the Caterham of Giedo van der Garde resulted in a punctured left rear tyre for Hulkenberg and he ended his race up the escape road. Esteban Gutierrez: Sauber (pictured) A poor start from Gutierrez left him trailing behind the Caterham of Giedo van der Garde before he got his head down and split the bigger names of Felipe Massa and Jenson Button. An early stop put the young Mexican driver in the wake of Jules Bianchi’s Marussia before he could set about displacing the Frenchman and the Williams of Pastor Maldonado. A move on Daniel Ricciardo moved Esteban up to 15th before a mistake at Turn One sent Gutierrez into the barriers, ending his race on Lap 67.
