GP Week : Issue 186
Three days of testing at Misano brought the promise of some relief for beleaguered Ducati riders, after Andrea Dovizioso gave an admittedly guarded thumbs up to the latest version of the “lab-bike” chassis, and opined that he might consider racing it at next weekend’s German GP at the sachsenring. While Nicky Hayden concentrated on development of anti-wheelie software, Dovi switched to the latest version of the frame, which has revised geometry and stiffness ratios compared with the “stock” factory bike. “There were some positives, like an improvement with the feeling on corner entry,” he said in an official statement. “We must decide what to do: it’s a new part so we have to understand whether or not we can have it in time for the Sachsenring.” Talking to Italian website GPOne, he described better braking, “although there is still understeer when you open the throttle. But the feelings are more good than bad,” he said. After dire results – tenth and eleventh – at Assen, Dovi felt it more important to look for progress than try to recover ground in a championship battle already lost. The new chassis can fit the existing engine, but there is a likelihood that he will have only one for the German race, unless a second can be completed in time. Even so, Dovi thought it worth the risk. “We’re not playing the world, so it will be an important test,” he said. There is no better place than a grand prix to make comparisons with the competition.” Factory tester Michele Pirro, MotoGP rider Andrea Iannone and Laguna replacement Alex de Angelis (see separate item) were also at the test, as well as the equally beleaguered Ducati Superbike team.
