One random sample had the cars registering no more than 100 decibels at the braking zone for Turn 1, a point at which the 2013 normally aspirated V8s would be 10 decibels louder, at least. Third-fastest qualifier Nico Rosberg comments at the saturday media conference that from the cockpit, he can hear things he has not heard before. “The difference is that I can hear my brake locking, which I never used to hear, like in a road car, when it’s squealing in the corner,” he said. “Now you can hear that because there’s not so much engine noise any more and that’s really really strange – but also interesting, because now I can also hear my rear locking. even though I don’t feel it that much, it gives me some extra indication.” Daniel Ricciardo said that he could “hear the wind a lot more, especially at high speed. I guess you know when the gusts are blowing.” While all closely associated with F1 will of course promote the positives of the new sound of F1, the early evidence is that the man in the street isn’t impressed ...
