MOTOGP >>> nEWs Moto2: RAbAT SEASON? Tito Rabat may have won the Qatar Moto2 Grand Prix by ‘only’ 0.04s but he need not have worried about which side of the photo finish he was on. After recovering from a bad start, Rabat and Takaaki Nakagami fought out a close decision at the chequered flag, only for the second-placed Japanese rider to be disqualified after the race. His bike was found to have a non-regulation air filter. The DSQ appears to have come from a misunderstanding. The use of paper air filters was made mandatory at the start of last year, but Idemitsu Team Asia continued to use the previously acceptable foam filters. This was not picked up by officials because neither of its entries made it onto the podium during the season. Tady Okada, the former 500GP racer winner who now runs the team, explained in the press release that they had failed to interpret the rules correctly. The DSQ means that Marc VDS scored a 1-2 finish, with Mika Kallio taking second after his team borrowed a Kalex frame from the Petronas team after he crashed his own into the bike of Sandro Cortese in Qualifying. Tom Luthi was the top Suter rider in fourth, which became third post-race. Two reigning World Champions made impressive Moto2 debuts. Maverick Vinales, the 2013 Moto3 champion, was top rookie in his debut for the Pons team in fourth, two spots ahead of Sam Lowes. The World Supersport champion rode sensibly on his Speed Up and both newcomers promise much for the future.
