GP Week : Issue 206
Any thoughts that any out-of- contract drivers had of getting Nico Rosberg’s seat have gone with the news that he will stay a Mercedes- Benz driver for the foreseeable future. The team announced last week that Nico Rosberg has signed a “multi-year contract extension” with the title-leading team. That usually means that he has signed for another two years, meaning that he will stay in silver for the 2015 and ‘16 seasons. “It has been a difficult road to get to where we are now, but everybody kept believing and, thanks to the fantastic support from Mercedes-Benz, we are now leading the way in F1,” said Rosberg. The head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Toto Wolff welcomed the announcement. “Nico has been part of the silver Arrows project since day one and he has a big stake in the development of the team since 2010. His speed, commitment and focus have all helped to give clear direction and to drive the team forward. “With his performances in 2014, Nico has demonstrated to the outside world what we knew already in the team: that he is one of the very top drivers in Formula 1. “This new contract brings us important stability and continuity for the future and I am delighted to be able to make the announcement in time for the home race of Mercedes-Benz and Nico in Hockenheim.” Rosberg, 29, made his F1 debut with Williams in 2006. He made his 157th start at Hockenheim last weekend, and has won six races and taken 19 podium finishes. His re-signing comes during an amazing fortnight within which he also got married, watched his national team win the World Cup ... then capped it off by winning his 'home' race, the German Grand Prix ...
