F1 >>> nEWs Pastor Maldonado has signed on for another year with lotus. The Venezuelan, who has yet to score a point this year, agreed terms with the team and the news was confirmed by Lotus owner Gerard Lopez in Germany on the weekend. “Despite the difficulties, he recognises our true potential as a team and we recognise his true potential as a driver,” Lopez said. “We will achieve great things together.” Maldonado drove for Williams in 2012-13 before he made the move to Lotus at the end of last season. He carries heavy backing from the Venezuelan government, with oil company PDVSA and the country’s tourism authority proving financial input. Lotus is having a tough year, financially and on-track, and its cars looked even worse than they have this season at Hockenheim, following the removal by all teams of the FRICS systems. at BriEFly » Williams had a rough start to their German GP weekend when a fire prompted a number of team personnel to evacuate their hotel at 3am on Friday morning. Four team members were taken to a local hospital for checks, but all were promptly released. Some team personnel found they had nowhere to sleep so were bussed back the track in the middle of the night for a nap. No drivers or team management were staying at the hotel. » Nico Rosberg made his first GP start at Hockenheim as a married man. After the British GP, he married his long- time girlfriend Vivian Sibold in Monaco. The two have been a couple for some years. » Jenson Button started working with a new race engineer in Germany. Tom Stallard took over the role from Dave Robson, who is heading for a factory-based job at Woking. Stallard, 35, is accustomed to competition; the former rower he won a Silver Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as part of Team GB’s men’s eight. » Amid a number of retrenchments at Caterham F1 as part of its restructure, Alexander Rossi has parted ways with the team. The American joined Caterham in 2011 and has raced for them in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2012 and in GP2 in the last two seasons. Rossi was Caterham’s F1 test driver, and drove in Friday Practice in Montreal.
